Kabul: From May 10 to 26, floods in Afghanistan damaged or destroyed 10,100 homes and displaced over 5,000 families in the northern provinces, according to a UNICEF report. Heavy rainfall and flash floods struck northeastern Afghanistan on May 10 and 11, affecting 21 districts, including five in Badakhshan, 10 in Baghlan, and six in Takhar province. UNICEF reported 347 confirmed deaths and 1,651 injuries. Approximately 7,800 homes were either destroyed or damaged, displacing over 5,000 families, according to the Taliban-run Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation.
The floods also damaged roads, bridges, health facilities, public schools, agricultural land, and livestock. Ghor province experienced heavy rains and flash floods on May 16 and 17, affecting 10 districts, with Murghab being the hardest hit. Reports indicate 40 deaths, including 10 children, 20 missing persons, and 49 injuries. Preliminary assessments show over 410 homes and 27 health and nutrition facilities were either destroyed or damaged, and 62 schools were severely impacted.
On May 17, flash floods hit Faryab province, affecting nine districts. Initial reports suggest 62 deaths, 18 injuries, and 1,890 houses damaged or destroyed, along with three health facilities and 23 schools impacted. Residents of Baghlan, Ghor, and Badakhshan, some of the hardest-hit areas, have reported not receiving aid and are in urgent need of support.
