KABUL – A roadside bomb exploded near a security convoy in Lakki Marwat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, on Sunday, killing seven soldiers, including an army captain – a significant surge in militant violence against Pakistani security forces.
While no group has claimed responsibility, the Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), are suspected due to their strong presence and increased activity since the Afghan Taliban’s rise to power in 2021.
The region has experienced a dramatic rise in militant attacks, particularly targeting security forces. Earlier this year, a suicide bombing in Peshawar claimed 101 lives, predominantly police officers. In the past five months, 237 terrorist incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have resulted in 65 police deaths and 86 injuries.
The Peshawar counter-terrorism department reported killing 117 militants and arresting 299 in recent operations. Pakistani officials accuse Afghanistan’s Taliban of sheltering TTP fighters, a claim denied by the Afghan Taliban government and the TTP.
