KABUL – Trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan through the Torkham border has gradually resumed over recent days, with truck drivers navigating the challenging Shalman-Malagori route to transport goods to Peshawar or cross into Afghanistan.
Bilateral trade was abruptly halted on August 21 when hundreds of Kukikhel tribesmen blocked the main Peshawar-Torkham Highway at Bhagiyarree, demanding the return of over 6,000 displaced families from their tribe to Rajgal and nearby areas in Tirah Valley.
While the main highway remains closed to heavy traffic, authorities have permitted other vehicles to use an unpaved dirt road running parallel to the main route. In response to the prolonged closure, many frustrated truckers have opted for alternate routes, including the Ali Masjid-Jabba road, to deliver stranded goods, primarily perishable items, to their destinations.
