KABUL – Afghanistan has dropped to 116th place out of 127 countries in the 2024 Global Hunger Index, with a grim score of 30.8, signaling a worsening food insecurity crisis under Taliban rule. Last year, the country ranked 114th with a score of 30.6, reflecting a continued decline.
The report reveals that 30.4% of the population is malnourished, 5.8% of children die before the age of five, and 44.6% of children under five suffer from stunted growth due to chronic malnutrition. An additional 3.6% are underweight, indicating acute malnutrition.
The situation in Afghanistan is labeled “serious” and is compounded by a prolonged humanitarian crisis that has left over 24 million people in need of aid. With little progress since 2016, the UN warns that Afghanistan is unlikely to meet the goal of eradicating hunger by 2030.
