KABUL – Hsiao-Wei Lee, the World Food Programme’s country director for Afghanistan, warned Thursday that Afghanistan has become a “global hunger hotspot,” with over three-quarters of the population unable to afford a nutritious diet. Lee’s alarming statement came during an event in Kabul, marking China’s contributions to WFP efforts.
Despite these efforts, a critical funding shortfall left 11 million Afghans without emergency food aid this year, including over 2 million mothers and children who missed out on vital nutritional support. As winter looms, Lee stressed the urgent need for sustained emergency aid to prevent further suffering.
Ma Chen Guang, the Economic Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy, underscored the severity of the crisis, pledging China’s continued collaboration with WFP to help Afghan families in dire need. China’s recent donation enabled the WFP to distribute over 2,000 metric tons of food, reaching nearly 250,000 people.
