KABUL – Iran’s ambassador and special envoy to Afghanistan, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, has announced efforts to attract private Afghan investment for large-scale projects in Iran. Speaking on October 25 at the “International Export Exhibition to Central Asia and Afghanistan,” Qomi outlined ambitions to create North-South and East-West trade corridors, leveraging the strategic Chabahar port as a linchpin for economic connectivity with Afghanistan.
Qomi stressed that bolstering Afghanistan’s economy would have a positive regional impact and stated that Iran intends to ease investment barriers to foster Afghan involvement. Afghan businesses have already poured over $3 billion into Iran, according to the Iran-Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce.
However, this pursuit of economic ties contrasts sharply with the escalating hardships Afghan refugees face in Iran. Reports detail forced deportations, harassment, and even instances of violence against Afghan migrants, creating a humanitarian crisis. As the harsh winter nears, the situation for these refugees grows increasingly urgent, drawing appeals from global aid organizations.
