KABUL – In an extraordinary political resurgence, Donald Trump has been elected the 47th president of the United States, marking a dramatic comeback for the former leader. The Associated Press called the race for Trump early this morning, declaring his victory in Wisconsin—a pivotal battleground state—at 5:34 a.m. Eastern. Trump’s triumph, clinched by key wins in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Georgia, reversed losses he suffered in these states four years ago.
Election Day passed largely without incident, despite some bomb threats—later deemed hoaxes—that briefly interrupted voting in several battleground states.
The election also saw significant ballot measures related to abortion rights across the country. In Arizona, voters approved a measure to protect abortion rights up to the point of viability, with similar protections reaffirmed in Nevada, New York, and Colorado. Meanwhile, Missouri voters struck down a strict abortion ban, and Montana moved to enshrine abortion rights in its constitution. Efforts to protect abortion rights in Nebraska, Florida, and South Dakota, however, did not succeed.
As Trump prepares to take office, the International Rescue Committee, a prominent U.S. humanitarian organization led by former British diplomat David Miliband, has urged the administration to uphold America’s humanitarian values. The IRC called for policies that support vulnerable populations, including immigrants and asylum seekers, and emphasized the importance of the U.S. refugee resettlement program in strengthening the nation.
