KABUL – The Ministry of Public Health in Afghanistan has launched a nationwide polio vaccination campaign, aiming to immunize approximately 5.3 million children under the age of five. The campaign, which commenced on Monday, November 25, will run through November 27 across 11 provinces, with Herat province scheduled for November 30 to December 2.
This initiative spans southern, eastern, central, northeastern, and western regions, reflecting a concerted effort to curb the spread of the crippling disease. Families have been urged to ensure their children receive the vaccine as part of this critical health campaign.
The urgency of the drive is underscored by a recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO), highlighting an alarming rise in polio cases. In 2024 alone, 72 cases have been recorded—23 in Afghanistan and 49 in neighboring Pakistan. Both nations remain the last strongholds of the disease globally, where polio continues to threaten the lives and futures of children.
Health authorities and international organizations emphasize the significance of sustained vaccination efforts. Despite logistical and security challenges, these campaigns represent a crucial step toward eradicating polio from the region.
