KABUL – The Taliban have extended congratulations to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) on their successful overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Taliban expressed optimism for a unified and stable Syria under an Islamic government aligned with the aspirations of its people.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan congratulates the leadership of the HTS movement and the people of Syria on recent advancements leading to the removal of factors of conflict and instability, culminating in the fall of Damascus to the people of Syria under HTS leadership,” the Taliban’s statement said.
They further called for a peaceful transition of power that fosters national unity and reconciliation. “It is hoped that the process will establish a sovereign and service-oriented Islamic government that unifies all Syrians without discrimination or retribution, ensures the return of refugees, and protects the nation from foreign rivalries,” the statement added.
The Taliban also urged the international community to support Syria’s new leadership and adopt policies of positive engagement. “We call on all foreign actors involved in Syria to cooperate with each other and the new leadership, enabling the country to embark on a path of good governance, stability, and security,” they said.
Assad’s Rule Ends as Rebels Capture Damascus
The Taliban’s message comes amid dramatic developments in Syria. On Sunday, rebel forces led by HTS captured Damascus, forcing Bashar al-Assad to flee after more than two decades in power. The fall of the capital followed the seizure of key cities, including Homs and Aleppo, in a rapid resurgence of the country’s civil war.
Hadi al-Bahra, a prominent Syrian opposition leader, confirmed the development, saying, “Damascus is now without Bashar al-Assad.” Rebel forces also issued a statement declaring, “The tyrant Bashar al-Assad has fled.”
HTS’s rapid military advancements have shifted the balance of power in Syria, with the group now poised to assume control over the country. The international community is closely watching how HTS will handle governance, reconciliation, and the return of millions of displaced Syrians.
As Syria navigates this critical juncture, the Taliban’s message highlights the geopolitical ripple effects of Assad’s ousting and the challenges ahead in stabilizing the war-torn nation.
