KABUL – US President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to withdraw the US military equipment left behind in Afghanistan by the Taliban. Speaking at the Capitol One Arena in Washington on Sunday, January 19, Trump sharply criticized the Biden administration for abandoning weapons, calling the move a “disaster.”
“They handed over our military equipment to the enemy,” Trump said, slamming Biden’s officials as “incompetent.” He also took aim at the billions in aid sent to Afghanistan, questioning, “Do you know that we used to give billions of dollars to Afghanistan every year?”
Trump reaffirmed his stance that Afghanistan has become one of the largest sellers of US military equipment globally, following the chaotic US withdrawal. Referring to the Taliban as “enemies,” he demanded that the group return the military assets, emphasizing that no further money should be given unless they comply.
On the third anniversary of the foreign forces’ exit from Afghanistan, the Taliban paraded US weaponry, an act Trump deemed a direct consequence of Biden’s “stupid” policy. He previously stated the value of the left-behind military equipment at $85 billion.
Trump’s remarks echo his previous claims about the embarrassing nature of the US withdrawal, promising action if he assumes office.
