KABUL – A member of the Taliban’s security forces opened fire at the United Nations’ largest compound in Kabul, killing one person and injuring another, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said Monday.
The incident occurred on Sunday. The victim was a Taliban security force member stationed outside the compound, while the injured individual was an international security guard contracted by the UN. UNAMA stated that its security personnel did not return fire.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and both the Taliban and the UN are investigating. Following the attack, Taliban authorities temporarily restricted movement in and out of the compound, though those restrictions have since been lifted.
The UN compound in Kabul houses offices for multiple agencies and accommodations for international staff.
