KABUL – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov have announced intensified consultations on Afghanistan, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation to address the country’s ongoing challenges. Speaking at a joint press conference in Tehran, both diplomats highlighted their shared interest in Afghanistan’s stability and revealed ongoing discussions with key regional players, including China and Pakistan. Lavrov noted that the two sides are collaborating through formats like the Moscow Format and meetings involving Afghanistan’s neighbors and the “Big Four” group—China, Iran, Russia, and Pakistan.
Aragchi stressed that developments in Afghanistan remain a priority for both nations, stating, “Our talks have always continued in this regard, and we intend to consult each other more on this issue.” While neither country has formally recognized the Taliban-led government, both maintain close ties with Kabul and advocate for regional consensus to resolve Afghanistan’s political legitimacy and ensure full inclusion.
Experts have highlighted the significance of Iran and Russia’s engagement, noting that their cooperation is crucial for fostering stability and constructive dialogue in Afghanistan. As regional powers deepen their collaboration, the international community watches closely, hoping these efforts will pave the way for a more peaceful and inclusive future for Afghanistan.
