AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Georgia has marked five years of its armed forces’ services in Afghanistan.
A ceremony in this connection was held on Friday in Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia, where the country’s senior military officials participated. The Georgian armed forces (GAF) are participating in the NATO-led Afghan mission for the past five years.
Georgia’s Chief of General Staff of the armed forces, Maj. Gen. Vakhtang Kapanadze, said that in the past five years the country’s forces in Afghanistan have gained military experience and rendered sacrifices to protect their country.
The Georgian defense ministry said that GAF has offered steady and professional service in Afghanistan. Georgian forces were first part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission in the war-torn country, and now of the NATO’s new Resolute Support mission.
Georgia’s Minister of Defense, Tinatin Khidasheli, arrived in Afghanistan on Monday to mark her country’s Independence Day with the Georgian forces.
Since 2010, Georgian troops have served alongside the militaries of NATO members and non-member countries. Currently, 900 Georgian troops are taking part in the new NATO’s mission in Afghanistan.
As many as 29 Georgian soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan, since 2010. Though, Georgia is non-NATO member country, but contributed much to the ISAF and NATO mission.
