AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The Ministry of Defense (MoD) on Saturday said large-scale military operations are ongoing in 16 provinces, and insurgents have suffered heavy losses in the offensives.
Quoted by TOLOnews, the MoD deputy spokesman, Daulat Waziri, said that nearly 100 rebels have been killed during the military operations.
He said at least nine army troops have lost their lives in the crackdowns.
Waziri said the military operations were aimed at restraining the Taliban militants and other rebel groups. “No mercy was shown for insurgents during the military operations,” he added.
The military operations have been carried out in Herat, Badghis, Ghazni, Nangarhar, Paktia, Paktika, Daikundi, Kandahar, Sar-i-Pul, Badakhshan, Kunduz, Balkh, Baghlan, Helmand and Uruzgan provinces.
According to him, the ministry is leading 17 military operations in 16 provinces. Around seven Taliban fighters were held and dozens others were injured in the crackdowns.
A number of reports suggest that militants have mounted their resistance in Baghlan and Uruzgan province after they took control of a number of areas. However, the Interior Ministry rejects the reports and says the provinces will totally under control of the security forces, and the Taliban were not able to resist against Afghan troops.
Lawmakers from Uruzgan have expressed concern over what they call the possible falling of a number of districts into the hand of the Taliban.
Lawmaker Raihana Azad said that four districts will collapse in Uruzgan if the government did not pay serious attention on security situation in the province.
