AT-KABUL: The Meshrano Jirga urged the government to bring the five Taliban leaders, who are subjected to travel ban in Qatar, to Afghanistan.
Qatar the other day agreed to temporarily extend travel ban on the five Taliban commanders who were released from prison in Guantanamo Bay in a swap deal with the US. Muhammad Fazel, Noorullah Noori, Khairullah Khairkhwah, Abdul Haq Wasiq and Muhammad Nabi Omeri are the five Taliban leaders who were traded for a US soldier in May last year.
The Meshrano Jirga called on the government to pave the ground for the five Taliban to be transferred to Afghanistan.
The speaker of senate, Fazel Hadi Muslimyar, said: “The government should bring the five Taliban leaders to Afghanistan. If they have committed any they should be prosecuted inside their country, otherwise they should be allowed to live like ordinary Afghans.”
The deputy Speaker of the Wolesi Jirga, Nazir Ahmadzai, also urged the government bring the five Taliban to Afghanistan. Ahmadzai believes that the five Taliban leaders could prove helpful in bringing the Taliban to the negotiation table.
According to media reports, the travel ban on the Taliban leaders will remain in place until diplomatic negotiation for a long term solution yield result.
