AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Pakistan will soon sign a trilateral transit and trade agreement which will enhance economic and trade relations between the three regional countries, Pakistani media reported on Friday.
Accrding to Tajikistan Ambassador, Sherali S Jononov, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon have said the trilateral agreement will be finalized soon which will give impetus to economic and trade relations as well as regional cooperation.
Pakistan’s Express Tribune reported that the promise was made when Sharif, accompanied by a high-level delegation, visited Dushanbe on June 9-10 on the invitation of Tajikistan president for participation in an international conference on Implementation of the International Decade for Action “Water for Life” 2005-2015.
“The deal will not only connect the three countries, but will also make Pakistan a transit state that will earn more revenue,” said Jononov. “It will also make the region a hub of trade activities.”
The three countries have signed different agreements and are on the verge of implantation of many projects that are expected to benefit all the regional states. One of them is the hydroelectric power trade agreement which was signed by Afghanistan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan and Pakistan in December last year in Turkey. Another mega project is the CASA-1,000 project which is slated for completion by 2018 under the umbrella of the World Bank. Afghanistan will consume 300MW of exported electricity while Pakistan will receive 1,000MW. The project is expected to boost energy trade in the region that will lead to sustainable development.
