AT-KABUL: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government of Pakistan and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) strongly denounced terrorist attack on parliament in Kabul on Monday.
Narendra Modi in his twitter account termed the attack on Afghan parliament as a cowardly act. “There is no place for such attacks in democracy,” he said. Modi added that India stands shoulder to shoulder with people of Afghanistan in this hour.
UNAMA in press statement quoted the UN Secretary-General’s deputy special representative for Afghanistan, Tadamichi Yamamoto, as saying: “The attack against Parliament, for which the Taliban have claimed responsibility, is a clear and deliberate affront to democracy in Afghanistan— an attack against the Afghan peoples’ democratically elected representatives.”
The organization expressed deep concerns by the reports of civilian casualties in the attack.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned the attack on Wolesi Jirga’s facility.
It commended the role of Afghan security forces in effectively countering the attack.
Islamabad reaffirmed its commitment to fight against terrorism in close coordination with the Afghan government. “We stand with our Afghan brothers in our common struggle against terrorism,” it said.
Britain has also denounced the terror attack. Tobias Elwood, foreign office minister of UK responsible for Afghanistan, described it as an “appalling attack”.
