Govt urged to unmask faces behind parliament attack

Abdul Zuhoor Qayomi-KABUL: Terming the Monday’s attack on Parliament a venture of regional spy agencies, the Wolesi Jirga on Tuesday asked the National Unity Government (NUG) to trace the invisible actors behind the attack.

Annoyed at the terror attack, the lawmakers said that access of the terrorists to the gate of the parliament is a mystery that should be resolved.

They alleged that some Afghan officials facilitated the attackers following orders from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). They believed that the attack on the parliament was a reaction to refusal of the NDS-ISI deal.

“Monday terror attack on the parliament is a reaction of the ISI to rejection of the intelligence sharing deal with the National Directorate of Security [NDS],” said Fawzia Kofi, an MP from Badakhshan. She warned that such acts would turn Afghans against Pakistan.

Kofi also proposed that Sergeant Essa Khan Laghmani and other security personnel who immediately responded to the attack and killed terrorists should be appreciated.

“Families of the soldiers who defended the parliament must be shifted to a good house in the capital. Essa Khan shall be awarded with a title and some part of the lawmakers’ salary shall be given to him,” she suggested.

Shekiba Hashemi, an MP from Kandahar and member of the Internal Security Committee (ISC), said that targeting the Afghan legislators is a plan of the regional and international spy agencies, because the parliament is against the “Daesh project”.

She said that MPs should warn the leaders of the National Unity Government (NUG) to keep their differences away for sake of national interests; “otherwise an interim government must be established.”

Farooq Majroh, an MP from Heart, also said that it was a response from the ISI against refusal of the security agreement by the lawmakers.

“The security organizations must probe the case and disclose the faces behind the terror attack on the parliament,” said Majroh, adding, “We will never approve the NDS-ISI agreement even if the attacks on our lives continue.”

Abdul Rahman Rahmani, an MP from Balkh, termed the attack on the parliament and Afghan war a project by regional and international spy agencies. He said that some internal hands might be behind the attack, and there was need to trace these people.

“It is a mysterious act that took place in a very sensitive area. As an MP even I am not aware of the parliament. Therefore, those who helped the terrorists shall be arrested,” he said.

Dawood Kalakani, a member of the International Relations Committee (IRC) of the WJ, asked the president and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to break their silence on killing of innocent people and foil the bids of ISI.

President and the CEO should tell public that why Pakistan is so “desperate to kill” Afghans on daily basis, he asked.

Sher Wali Wardak, an MP from Kabul, said that people would be killed by Pakistan until the lawmakers do not cancel the NDS-ISI deal. “We will not approve such a shameful agreement,” he said.

Hameedullah Tokhi, another member of the ISC, said the peace talks with the Taliban were fruitless as the insurgent group never wanted to sit at the negotiations’ table.

He said that Afghan security forces should be equipped because the militants would not negotiate with a weak government.

At the end of the session, the legislators agreed to establish a special commission to draft a security mechanism.

The MPs also put a turban on head of the Wolesi Jirga’s speaker, Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, for his courage. They appreciated the speaker for properly handling the crisis and remaining with his colleagues,   till they were shifted to a safe place during the attack.

Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi said that supporting the NUG does not mean that the government should do everything behind the closed doors and would not inform the lawmakers.
