A stunning bluff: Will eliminate insurgents within six months, Ulomi tells Meshrano Jirga

By Akhtar M. Nikzad-KABUL: The Minister of Interior, Noorul Haq Ulomi, on Sunday claimed that within the next six months, the armed insurgents would be eliminated from the country and the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) would improve their military capabilities against anti-government elements in the country.

Meshrano Jirga (Senate) on Sunday summoned Noorul Haq Ulomi to brief the senators about the factors that fueled insecurity in northern provinces, the Monday’s terrorist attack on the parliament, lack of coordination between law enforcement agencies against the Taliban and inattention towards the local police.

The minister rejected the National Directorate of Security (NDS)’s statement about growing security challenges and Taliban threats. Ulomi said that Afghan National Police (ANP) would eliminate the insurgents within next six month from “every part of the country”.

The ANP is monitoring the security situation carefully and has planned special operations and large-scale offensives to clear the insecure areas of militants.

Chief of the NDS, Rahmatullah Nabil, on Saturday told Wolesi Jirga that security challenges would increase within next six months.

Ulomi underlined that there is close cooperation between all security organizations to conduct raids against rebels in various part of the country. “Afghan security forces are committed to ensure security. Sometimes they accept tactical retreat and hand over the districts to the insurgents in order to target the enemies,” he claimed.

Regarding current security challenges, the minister said that despite presence of security forces still eastern provinces are exposed to militant threats.

“Anti-government elements use different tactics and trying hard to get public support for fueling insecurity,” he added.

Senators said that local police had significant role in defeating insurgents in different parts of the country. They urged the Moa to provide facilities to the local police.

Local police has been active in 29 provinces of the country. The minister said that a delegation has been dispatched to the provinces to assess capabilities and requirements of the local police.

“In some provinces the local militias support the police in critical situation and they need to be equipped. However, in some provinces people expressed their concerns about role of the local police in insecurity,” said Ulomi.

Senators strongly criticized the US and NATO troops for acting as silent spectator in the whole scenario. They said that the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) with the US has not been fruitful.

Senator Gul Ahmad Azami said that according to the BSA, the US should defend Afghanistan and support ANSF against terrorists. “However, it is not happening,” he lamented.
