AT-KABUL: Minister-designate for defense, Masoom Stanikzai, failed to get vote of confidence from Wolesi Jirga on Saturday.
Speaker of the Wolesi Jirga, Abdur Rauf Ibrahimi, said that Stanikzai has failed to win confidence of the parliament. “He did not find way to Ministry of Defense as minister. In today’s session 213 members of the Wolesi Jirga were present. Mr. Stanikzai needed 107 votes to become minister,” the speaker said.
Out of 213 votes Stanikzai received only 84 votes of confidence. Ibrahimi urged President Ashraf Ghani to introduce new face as defense minister to the parliament.
Stanikzai had served as member of the National Security Council and secretary to the High Peace Council (HPC). He was the third nominee who failed to find way to ministry of defense as minister.
Before Stanikzai, the former Army Chief Shir Mohammad Karimi also failed to get vote of confidence from the parliament.
Afzal Ludin was also nominated as defense minister, but he has withdrawn his nomination before going to the parliament due to some political reasons.
