In a new peace bid, help is sought of Maulana Sami-ul-Haq, the chief of Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-S) and the administrator of Madrassa Haqqaniya—a religious seminary considered to be a nursery of the Afghan Taliban.
AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Afghanistan’s Ambassador to Pakistan requested the chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-S) on Saturday to support the nascent peace process between the Afghan government and insurgents.
Regarding the meeting, Afghanistan’s Consul General in Peshawar, Syed Mohammad Ibrahim Khel, said that Janan Mosazai asked Maulana Samiul Haq to facilitate the reconciliation process.
In the meeting which took place at Samiul Haq’s resident in Nowshera, the Afghan ambassador urged the JUI-S chief to use his influence over the Taliban and convince them to shun violence.
Samiul Haq is known as “father of the Taliban”, because most of the Taliban leaders and fighters have graduated from his seminary “Darul Uloom Jamia Haqqania” at Akora Khattak, Nowshera.
Still many Taliban leaders visit the seminary and Samiul Haq for guidance and support. Haq is known for his pro-Taliban stance who repeatedly favored the Afghan insurgent groups. In the Saturday meeting he also said that the foreign troops should leave Afghanistan aimed at bringing durable peace.
“All the three [Pakistan and Afghan governments and the Taliban] should first get rid of foreign forces as we cannot achieve any success in the presence of the foreign domination,” the Express Tribune quoted Haq’s spokesman as saying.
Haq informed Mosazai that he had requested the Taliban representatives to show unity. He said that he also offered services for mediation among the rival factions.
“Maulana believes Afghans could foil international conspiracies by forging unity amongst their ranks,” the spokesman said.
