AT: KABUL: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) called on insurgents to cease attacks in civilian populated areas.
UNAMA termed last Friday (7th August) as the deadliest day for civilians in Afghanistan since the organization began systematically recording civilian casualties since 2009. Three attacks in Kabul the other day caused at least 355 civilian casualties— 42 deaths and 313 wounded.
“Those responsible for suicide and complex attacks in civilian-populated areas can no longer shrug off the disproportionate harm to the civilian population they cause,” a statement issued by UNAMA quoted Nicholas Haysom, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, as saying.
He said, the suffering caused by these tactics in terms of civilian deaths, injuries, and the loss of family members, is extreme, irreversible and unjustifiable in any terms.
The statement added that between 1st January and 7th August 2015, UNAMA documented 1,523 civilian casualties (282 deaths and 1,241 injured) from complex and suicide attacks launched by militants, including the Taliban, almost doubling the death and injuries compared to the same period in 2014.
The UNAMA extended its condolences to the bereaved families and reiterated its support to the people of Afghanistan.
