Educational institutes to get IT facilities

AT-KABUL: The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) signed agreements with the ministries of Education and Higher Education for provision of information technology facilities to the educational institutes.

The institutes would also be linked with international universities aimed at enhancing capacity of teachers and students.

Minister of Communication and IT, Abdul Razaq Vahidi, in a joint press conference on Saturday said that the project costs around $20 million and based on the agreement majority of the educational institutes would be equipped with the IT services including computer labs.

“The ministry is committed to expand the internet services to all state-run educational institutes to pave the ground for instruction of modern lessons through video conference, provided by the world universities,” he said.

He said that the optical fiber would provide the internet service and the project would be completed within the next five years.

Minister of Higher Education, Farida Mohmand, termed extension of IT services to the higher educational institutes important, saying the linking of the varsities with the world universities would resolve the major instructional problem faced by teachers and students.

“Expansion of the IT facility in the universities will have considerable impact over enhancement of modern and professional skills of the lecturers to learn new methods of teaching,” she said.

Minister of Education, Asadullah Hanif Balkhi, said that the ministry is determined to include a subject about computer and IT in the schools syllabus.

He underlined that so far there are many challenges in front of the IT project in the schools.

According to him, absence of electricity in the remote districts and lack of proper school-buildings are major problems. He said that 40 percent of students attend classes in tents in the remote areas.

Analysts believe that if the government could expand the information technology facility to the educational institutes it would cost much.

Abdul Wali Azami said that first of all the government should provide electricity to schools in the provinces because without electricity execution of the IT program would be difficult if not impossible.
