AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The Independent Election Commission (IEC) said that it was all set to hold parliamentary elections, but only if the government tends to hold the polls.
Azadi Radio while quoting the deputy Chief of the IEC, Abdul Rahman Hotaki, said the poll body was ready for parliamentary and district council elections. “We have all the technical preparations to hold the parliamentary and district councils’ elections in the beginning of next solar year, but we want the government to cooperate,” he added. IEC said it could hold the polls within a few months but given that first the government ensures security in provinces, arrange census in districts, and provides the required budgets.
Parliament’s five-year term expired on June 22, but elections scheduled April were postponed till unknown time, due to some political issues. However, President Ghani through a decree extended parliaments mandate until a vote could be held.
The Transparent Election Foundation of Afghanistan (TEFA) chief Mohammad Naeem Ayubzada believe that without bringing reforms, holding free and fair elections will not be possible. “Reforms should be brought to rebuild trust in elections system,” he said, terming reforms as a key condition for holding free and fair elections.
