AT-KABUL: The 4th death anniversary of the former Afghan president and High Peace Council (HPC) chief Burhanuddin Rabbani was marked on Sunday in Kabul, with participation of high-ranking officials, jihadi leaders and lawmakers.
Addressing the ceremony, ex-President Hamid Karzai commended Prof. Rabbani’s indefatigable efforts to bring long lasting peace to Afghanistan. He said that Rabbani’s assignation was aimed at undermining peace efforts.
Hamid Karzai said that Rabbani was assassinated by enemies of peace and stability.
The ex-president expressed his deep concerns over large-scale immigration of young Afghans to the European Union (EU). He advised them to stay in their country and become future leaders of Afghanistan. “If you stay in Afghanistan you can become a minister, a very good doctor or an engineer, but there is no future for you in Europe,” he urged Afghan youths who are seeking asylum in the EU.
He assured youth that situation in Afghanistan would improve soon and asked them not to be deceived by the gloom and doom propaganda of western media.
Hamid Karzai also urged the religious scholars and tribal elders to prevent people from leaving the country for Europe.
Abdul Rab Rasool Sayyaf, a prominent jihadi leader, urged the government to fire black sheep from the government ranks. He said that “black sheep” inside the government are more dangerous than the enemy. He added that he is ready to give list and address of those who are part of the current administration but in reality are agents of the foreign spy agencies.
Motivating Afghan troops, Ustad Sayyaf said that those who are killed in fight against the militants are martyrs. He also termed the Islamic State (IS), also known as Daesh, as un-Islamic group causing harm to Islam.
He stressed that outsiders cannot bring peace to Afghanistan.
President Ashraf Ghani in his message said that bringing peace requires sacrifices. “We lose our friends and close allies on daily basis and their blood leave us an important message—to maintain unity,” he added. He said that Ustad Rabbani even sacrificed his life to bring peace to his nation.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and son of late Burhanuddin Rabbani, Salahuddin Rabbani, said that his father was very committed to his goal of bringing lasting peace to Afghanistan. He called on the new generation of the country to follow goal of the late leader and bring peace and stability to their war-weary country.
Burhanuddin Rabbani was assassinated by a suicide bomber posing as peace mediator at his residence in Wazir Akbar Khan area of Kabul in 2011. Ustad Rabbani was president of Afghanistan from 1992 to 1996.
