Unregistered seminaries may pose threats if not controlled: AISS

Abdul Zuhoor Qayomi-KABUL: The Afghanistan Institute for Strategic Studies (AISS) advised the Afghan government in its report released on Monday to register the undocumented seminaries (madrassas) in the country as the unregistered religious schools were disseminating radical ideologies in the country.

According to the survey report which covered 306 teachers and students of 50 unregistered madrassas in ten provinces including Badakhshan, Herat, Kandahar, Badghis, Balkh, Kabul, Kunar, Kunduz, Nangarhar and Bamian, radicalism is gradually on raise. These madrassas are not financed or facilitated by the Ministry of Education, said the report.

The report has said that radicalism in the religious schools which are out of the government control is increasing.

Cultural and social adviser to the AISS, Mohammad Moheq, said that unregistered madrassas may pose serious threats if the government failed to control them.

“Though, it is an issue to be concerned about but if the government failed to monitor and document these madrassas then it will become a serious threat,” he said.

Seventeen percent of students termed suicide attacks permissible to defend the religion while 75 percent others condemn suicide attacks in any circumstance.

He said the extremists would recruit those students who are thinking that suicide attacks are allowed to defend Islam in Afghanistan.

He urged the government and religious scholars to teach true Islam to the students through media.

According to the report, 80 percent students and teachers of the religious scholars condemn suicide attacks on Afghan security forces.

In response to a question about the Taliban, 60 percent of the students called Taliban as puppets while only three percent termed them real fighters in ten provinces.

He said that mutual understanding is necessary to educate the students of seminaries as 70 percent of the respondents are against liberal people working in the government.

Regarding participation of women in the government, 85 percent of the instructors and students are in favor of women participation. Fifty percent respondents termed democracy a challenge to Islamic values.
