AT-KABUL: The Afghan Special Forces have retaken control of the strategic northern city of Kunduz from Taliban forces, after it was fallen to militants on Monday, local official told Afghanistan Times on Thursday.
The Afghan security force “now controls Kunduz city,” Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Seddiqi said on his official Twitter feed. “It is retaken and being cleared from terrorists,” he said.
Kunduz police spokesman, Sarwar Hussaini told Afghanistan Times the operation began late last night and the city was clear of “terrorists” in the morning.
Ministry of Defense said the fight is underway in outskirts of Kunduz city in which 150 Taliban fighters have been killed and 90 others injured.
The operation will continue to clear all districts of the province from militants.
President Ashraf Ghani yesterday night ordered security forces to clear the city from Taliban fighters.
Taliban said their fighters were still fighting in the city, who also confirmed airstrikes were carried out against their fighters by foreign troops.
The Taliban overran Kunduz, a city of 300,000 people, on Monday after a surprise assault involving hundreds of fighters, pushing government forces back to the local airport.
