AT-Kabul: US and Afghan security forces in a joint offensive dismantled al-Qaeda network in Kandahar province and killed dozens of militants in Shorabak district of the province, military official said on Tuesday.
The US spokesman for Afghanistan Brig. Gen. Wilson Shoffner said the US and Afghan troops have dismantled al-Qaeda sites and killed scores of militants. According to Shoffner it was the largest joint ground assault operation they have ever conducted in Afghanistan. He furthered that the US also conducted 63 airstrikes as part of the offensive
“The operation we have conducted was comprised of 200 Afghan and U.S. troops,” he said.
Security forces have seized anti-aircraft weapons, rocket-propelled grenades, bomb-making materials, passports, laptops, phones, and other tools to be used in terrorism.
“The goal of the operation was to uproot the terrorist network in Afghanistan,” Shoffner said. He added they struck a major al-Qaeda sanctuary in the center of the Taliban’s historic heartland. “This significant operation is a testament to the professionalism and expertise of our Afghan partners, which clearly demonstrates the growing capability of the Afghan security forces,” he said.
General Dawlat Waziri, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense told a press conference on Monday that 234 militants were killed during Shorabak operation.
