AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Spain wrapped up its 14-year long military mission n Afghanistan while leaving its 25 troops in Kabul, a media report said.
At a ceremony presided over by Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria in western Herat province, the Spanish armed forces lowered their flag and closed its almost 14-year military mission in Afghanistan.
Santamaria arrived 14 hours late to the ceremony because of technical glitch in the aircraft that flew her to the Asian country.
Accompanied by Defense Chief of Staff Adm. Fernando Garcia Sanchez and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Jaime Dominguez Buj, the Deputy Prime Minster lauded the forces for their defense services as a part of the global mission against terror.
While remembering 100 troops fallen during the mission in Afghanistan, Santamaria said it was impossible to forget that the army come “to a war that demanded the greatest efforts right up to the ultimate consequences.”
The mission was started in January 2002 whereas nearly 30,000 Spanish troops have served in Afghanistan.
Those killed in the line of duty, the Deputy Prime Minister, said that they lost their lives while fulfilling their duty to bring stability in Afghanistan and improve the future of the Afghans.
