AT-KABUL: The High Peace Council (HPC) stressed that structure of the council should be overhauled. Acting chairman of the council, Abdul Hakim Mujahid, said that members of the council lack a united view regarding peace talks with the Taliban.
While talking to a session about future of the peace process, Mujahid said the national unity government (NUG) had promised to devise a mechanism for the HPC. “We are still waiting for the government to overhaul structure of the HPC,” he added.
Mujahid urged the government to appoint honest and committed people as member of the council. “A number of HPC member are not interested in bringing peace to Afghanistan,” he said.
He said that the new leader of the Taliban militants is willing to talk peace with the Afghan government. However, he termed mistrust between parties to the current war as the main hurdle before peace talks. Mujahid also urged the international community to sincerely cooperate in the peace process of Afghanistan.
This comes at a time that the government believes that peace efforts would not yield in positive results, unless Pakistan ends its support for the Taliban militants. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah recently said that Pakistan is yet to end its support for the militants.
Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during his recent trip to the United States said that Islamabad cannot bring the Taliban to the negotiation table and fight against them at the same time.
Malalai Shinwari, advisor to President Ashraf Ghani in youth’s affairs, told the session that the HPC has failed to represent the Afghan government in talks with the Taliban militants. She said that the government should dismantle the council and should assign a delegation to represent the government in peace parleys with the Taliban.
