WJ urges govt, Taliban for peace talks

Abdul Zuhoor Qayomi-KABUL: Wolesi Jirga (WJ) or Lower House of the parliament on Saturday asked the government and the insurgents to return to the table of talks.

The lawmakers said that the two sides should take honest steps to restore durable peace.

The demand for “real peace talks” came after the legislators expressed their concerns over “ambiguous policy” of the government on security.

Terming the situation in Afghanistan as critical, the MPs said that insurgency was growing rapidly. Condemning the beheading of the seven passengers in Zabul province, they said that security situation was fragile in Sar-i-Pul, Badakhshan, Nangarhar and some other provinces.

Zaheer Sadat, an MP from Panjshir, said that the government should have a clear policy regarding the foes and friends and deal with those with iron hands who are fighting the Afghan government as the Taliban did during their regime.

He said the government should put pressure on the strategic partners to provide support to the Afghan security forces.

Zekria, an MP from Kabul, said that peace is need of the hour, but Islamabad should not be trusted for its “symbolic peace statements”.  The lawmaker said that partner countries should pave the ground for durable peace and stability.

Salih Muhammad Salih, a representative of Kunar people in the Wolesi Jirga, asked his colleagues to stress on the national unity in order to foil the enemies bids.

He urged the government to distribute the electronic national identity cards soon.

Chairing the session, the deputy speaker Nazer Ahmadzai said that Afghans want peace in their homeland but the Taliban were not ready. He said that peace talks are not possible if the insurgents don’t join the reconciliation process. He also asked the US to implement the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA).
