AT-KABUL: The Special Electoral Reforms Commission (SERC) urged the government to appoint members of the selection committee soon.
The selection committee will propose new members of the Independent Election Commission and Independent Electoral Complaint Commission to the government.
SERC Chief, Shah Sultan Akefi, while talking to a press conference on Saturday, termed formation of the body as crucial for bringing reforms and restoring people’s trust on the election process. He said that further delay in appointment of the selection committee will undermine legitimacy of the government.
He said that people have lost their trust on the election process and to rebuild the trust the government should implement the package of reforms prepared by the reform body.
He termed the role of political parties in rebuilding trust of people on the election process as important. He also questioned legitimacy of the current parliament because its term officially ended on June 22.
Sadiqullah Tawhidi, deputy chief of the reform body, stressed that the selection committee should be appointed soon to nominate new people as members of the election bodies.
He urged the National Unity Government to deliver on their promises and implement the recommendations of the reform commission.
The selection committee is responsible for introducing 21 candidates for the membership of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) and 15 candidates for the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) to the president. Out of these candidates, the president will then select seven commissioners for the IEC and five commissioners for IECC.
