AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The Taliban militants have a major training center in Kohestanat district of Sar-e-Pul province, said a number of lawmakers from the province.
Aziza Jalees, an MP from Sar-e-Pul, told the plenary session of Wolesi Jirga that the militants have a training center in the district, where foreign militants are giving training to the Taliban militants about making bombs, suicide vests and other terror activities. “Insurgents are using modern technology in making suicide vests in the district. The suicide vest can destroy areas within 200 meters radius,” she added.
Muhammad Hassan Balkhabi, another lawmaker from the province, said that Kohestanat was one of the most insecure districts of Sar-e-Pul. “Recently there were some Uzbek militants in the district, who were involved in planting bombs. One of them was killed in fighting against security forces, while several others were detained,” he said. He said that the Taliban might have a training center in the district.
A local security official admitted insecurity in the province, but reject presence of foreign militants. Ali Akbar Andarabi, a spokesman for the provincial police headquarters, told Azadi Radio that some Uzbek militants were giving training to the Taliban in the province around two years ago, but now they are not in Sar-e-Pul anymore. “We haven’t observed any training center of the militants in any district or center of the province over the past one year,” he added.
This comes at a time that recently the provincial governor said that retaking total control of Kohestanat district was in top priority of his second 100-day action plan.
