AT-KABUL: The civil society activists and scores of former employees of the electronic identity card department staged protest on Wednesday in front of the parliament house and asked the government to start distribution of e-Tazkira (computerized national identity card) before the Wolesi Jirga polls.
The protesters said that it has been one year that the lawmakers approved the population law but the authorities had not taken any measures to ensure timely issuance of the computerized national identity cards.
They said that the National Unity Government (NUG) leaders in their political agreement vowed to issue the e-Tazkira before the Wolesi Jirga elections.
They said that due to lack of budget and political determination, around 1,300 employees of the electronic identity card department were dismissed.
Mohammad Elyas, a protester, said the government should start distribution process of e-Tazkira before announcement of the parliamentary election schedule.
He urged the NUG leaders to put aside their political differences over issuance of the electronic ID cards and initiate the process.
“We ask the government to deliver on its pledge regarding distribution of electronic Tazkira. The computerized national identity cards must be issued before the Wolesi Jirga polls,” he said.
Jawid Nurani, another protestor, said that due to lack of political determination around 1,300 trained employees of the e-ID card department were terminated.
He said that the employees were fired because of differences between the two leaders.
