KABUL: The Asia Development Band (ADB) and the European Union donated $130 million for construction of 108 kilometer road and tertiary infrastructure along route.
The agreement of the grant was signed by the Minister of Finance, Aklil Hakimi, and country director of the ADB, Thomas Panell here on Tuesday.
Hakimi while talking at the event said that the ADB donated $109 million and the European Union $21 million for development of transport infrastructure, including construction of rail route in northern Balkh province.
“With $16 million co-funded by the Afghan government, total $146 million were allocated for infrastructure development projects,” he added. Hakimi said that the amount would be spent on construction of 108 kilometer road to connect Baharak and Eshkashim districts of Badakhshan province, rural development schemes, and capacity building at the Ministry of Public Works as well as construction of railway in northern Balkh province.
Thomas Panell said that the ADB was committed to lend its all-out support to development of transport networks and implementation of a comprehensive and integrated transportation plan in Afghanistan.
“Hitherto, the ADB has donated more than 1.2 billion for road, railway and airport projects in Afghanistan,” he added. (By Akhtar M.Nikzad)
