AT-KABUL: Afghan security forces have retaken control of the Musa Qala district of southern Helmand province from Taliban militants, in which at least 220 Taliban were killed and injured, Ministry of Defense said on Sunday.
The district was overrun by the insurgents on last Wednesday after it was besieged for several days, raising queries about the security of a town that dozens of foreign troops, particularly UK soldiers, had died defending.
20 Afghan security personnel were killed and 40 others wounded, when Taliban captured it last week.
Defense ministry in statement said the district was retaken at 1:00am and troops still busy in search operation.
Security forces suffered no casualties during the operation that were backed by army air force and commandos.
The operation featured Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers, police and National Directorate of Security (NDS) personnel. The offensive was still underway.
