Abdul Zuhoor Qayomi-KABUL: Legislators on Wednesday said they were not convinced with responses of security officials about growing insecurity and presence of newly emerged militant groups in parts of the country.
The National Security Advisor, Mohammad Hanif Atmar and other high ranking security officials were recently summoned by both houses of the parliament. The officials replied to queries of MPs and provided them information about security situation in Kunduz and other northern provinces, and in the meantime they discussed the presence of the self-proclaimed Daesh militants in Afghanistan.
Most of MPs in the Wolesi Jirga—the Lower House of the parliament—said they are not happy with the answers by security officials who were summoned in the house on Monday.
Blaming the government for neglect in ensuring security, Fawzia Kofi, an MP from Badakhshan, said the current situation has created a long gap between the government and the people. “The defending policy cannot solve any problem of this war-weary nation. The government should bring changes its policy regarding militants,” she said.
Abdul Rahman Rahmani, an MP from Farah, said the answers by security officials could not convince the lawmakers as their information were incorrect, particularly the information about Daesh militants.
Supporting her colleagues’ remarks, lawmaker Humaira Ayubi, said Daesh is planning change Farah as their center in a bid to threat the country and Iran; therefore, the government should turn its back to this issue.
Haji Naqibullah, an MP from Laghman, said Laghman is threatened by several armed groups, including the Taliban rebels and illegal armed men. He urged the government to adopt inclusive measures for the residents’ safety.
Sakhi Mushwanai, an MP from Kunar, termed the government’s peace efforts as fruitless and said Kabul should not play with the destiny of Afghans and should not pursue ineffective mechanisms for peace.
Another MP, Lalai Hameedzai, said the peace process is a failed procedure. “The government should directly talk with Mullah Omar, the Taliban’s leader, if it really wants to move forward the process. Carrying on the peace process through non-governmental organizations (NGOs) is useless,” he added.
