KABUL – A 22-year-old Afghan national was charged in France on Saturday for allegedly planning terror attacks on a French soccer stadium or shopping center. French anti-terrorism officials have confirmed the arrest but have not released the suspect’s name.
This comes just a day after the suspect’s relative, Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, was detained in Oklahoma, USA, for allegedly plotting an ISIS-inspired attack on the upcoming US Election Day. Tawhedi, 27, was arrested on October 7 for planning an assault rifle attack set for November 5, during the 2024 general election. A former CIA security guard in Afghanistan, Tawhedi entered the US legally following the 2021 US withdrawal.
US investigators are examining whether Tawhedi became radicalized after his arrival in the country, as he passed two security screenings without raising any alarms. The FBI continues its investigation.
Meanwhile, French authorities arrested the 22-year-old Afghan on October 8, one day after Tawhedi’s US arrest. The suspect is believed to have links to ISIS ideology and was targeting a high-casualty attack at either a stadium or shopping center. Two others were arrested in Toulouse and Fronton in southwestern France in connection with the plot but were later released.
Both countries are on heightened alert as investigations into these alleged terror plots unfold.
