KABUL: Umer Daudzai, head of the High Peace Council’s secretariat is in Islamabad for a four-day visit during which he is planned to discuss the government’s peace process and a religious scholar meeting with Pakistani officials.
Pakistan’s actual cooperation with the Afghan peace process and holding a meeting between the two countries’ religious scholars are called Daudzai’s visit agenda to discuss with Pakistan’s foreign minister and head of a religious party.
The peace council’s spokesman, Sayed Ehsan Taheri said Wednesday that Daudzai met Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and head of the Jamiat Ulema party, Maulana Fazl Rahman.
“In these meetings two subjects were discussed: Pakistan’s support of the Afghan peace process and practical steps by Islamabad and also holding a meeting with Pakistan’s religious scholars,” Taheri said.
Daudzai is expected to pay visit to some other countries in the region.
“If Pakistan is honestly cooperating, it does it undoubtedly with the agreement of the country’s military and intelligence. The religious figures cannot help the peace process until the military and politicians do not agree,” said political analyst, Khaled Sadat.
Afghan government and its Western allies see Pakistan’s help as the key in the peace process. They believe that Islamabad could bring Taliban to table if it is honest in its commitments.
