KABUL: The Russian Federation plans to hold another conference on the Afghan peace, Russian embassy to Kabul said.
The embassy said in a statement that the conference was initiated by the United States, China, Russia and Pakistan, adding that a number of Afghan political figures were invited to attend the session.
However, the embassy did not provide details about the conference including its exact date. It said Tuesday that initial works had begun on the conference.
In Kabul, the reconciliation council confirmed the conference, saying its chairman Abdullah Abdullah had been invited.
The council also said that some other political leaders were invited to the conference too.
A source in the government said on condition of anonymity that the conference was planned to be held on March 18.
The source said on Tuesday that political leaders Hamid Karzai, Mohammad Karim Khalili, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Marshal Abdul Rashid Dostum and some others have received invitation calls.
Russian government held the first Moscow conference early 2019 in which Afghan political figures and Taliban representatives discussed the ways to end war and violence. Nobody from President Ghani’s government was invited to the first Moscow conference.
The conference is planned as the United States is working hard to convince Afghans to reach a political settlement. Washington has reportedly asked Turkey to host a conference on Afghan peace.
