KABUL: The Afghan defense and security forces have begun military maneuvers in the eastern parts of the country and just close to the controversial border line with Pakistan named Durand Line.
Ministry of Defense said on Saturday that the maneuvers were launched in the Goshta district of Nangarhar province. Goshta has been the scene of armed clashes between Afghan and Pakistani troops for several times in the past few years.
According to a statement issued by the ministry, infantry, commando units, border guards and air force were used in the drills.
The defense and security forces will exercise with all sources such as light and heavy weapons during the maneuvers began on Thursday.
Yasin Zia, the army chief, said that the drills along the border line had “a clear message to friends and foes”.
“This is an assurance for our friendly neighboring countries. This also tells a message to the countries who support and arm terrorists about our abilities to protect our borders.”
The ministry of defense says that the drills show fully preparedness of Afghan troops in confrontation with “domestic and foreign enemies”.
