KABUL: Afghan troops have retaken a key town from Taliban in western Herat province as fighting continues marked by huge casualties on the Taliban, defense officials said on Saturday.
Moreover, at least 131 Taliban militants were killed and 62 others wounded in a string of security operations by Afghan forces in different provinces since Friday.
The Ministry of Defense on Saturday said the army recaptured Gozar district of Herat province, driving Taliban militants out. It also said that Afghan troops have killed more than 131 militants and arrested five in raids that inflicted fatal injuries on 62 militants.
In a tweet, the ministry said, “Afghan security forces, with the support of the Afghan Air Force, have regained control of the Gozar district of Herat province from Taliban control.”
The ministry confirmed that the army managed to seize a large amount of weapons and ammunition during the operation.
Also nine rounds of mines planted by Taliban to target civilians and security forces in different provinces were discovered and defused by Afghan security forces, noted statement.
Afghanistan is currently witnessing clashes between government forces and Taliban militants who control large swath of rural Afghanistan.
