AT-KABUL: Afghan Vice President, Abdul Rashid Dostum, has survived an ambush by suspected Taliban fighters in northern Faryab province of Afghanistan on Friday.
A group of insurgents attacked Dostum’s convoy on a remote highway in Ghormach district of Faryab province on Friday morning.
Vice president’s security guards and security forces accompanying his convey fought back, killing eight militants and capturing 13 more alive, Faryab Police Press Office said in a statement.
Dostum was not injured in the attack, nor were any of his guards.
Vice president has travelled to Faryab to coordinate counter terrorism operations against Taliban in insecure parts of this province.
Dostum has said after clearing Faryab, he planned to coordinate a same operation in northeastern Kunduz province as well, where Taliban have in recent months captured some areas from security forces.
Vice president on Wednesday said the fight in Faryab was not against local Taliban, but against ISI-Spy Agency of Pakistan. A Pakistani General, known as Haji Shaikh was killed among Taliban fighters five days back in Faryab, he said.
