KABUL – Nasrat Ahmad Yar, a 31-year-old Afghan man who had spent several years assisting the US military in Afghanistan, was tragically shot and killed in Washington. Ahmad Yar had relocated to the United States with the hope of providing a better life for his wife and four children. Despite working as a ride-share driver, he managed to support his family in Afghanistan by sending them financial aid.
The incident occurred on Monday night when Ahmad Yar, concerned about meeting his rent obligations, went out to work. While the authorities have not yet made any arrests, surveillance footage captured the sound of a single gunshot, followed by the sight of four boys or young men fleeing the scene. To aid in the investigation, the police have offered a reward of $25,000 for information leading to an arrest.
Ahmad Yar had served the US military for approximately ten years as an interpreter and in various other roles, considering it his duty to contribute to a brighter future for the next generation of Afghans. While the Special Immigrant Visa program allowed Afghans who had worked closely with the US government to immigrate to America since 2009, Ahmad Yar initially chose to remain in Afghanistan. He believed he was needed there and wanted to continue supporting his colleagues until they no longer required his assistance.
Ahmad Yar’s killing highlights the challenges faced by Afghan allies who risked their lives working with the US military and their subsequent struggles to find safety and stability in a new country. His story serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals seeking a better future for themselves and their loved ones.
