KABUL: The committee for journalists’ safety calls Afghanistan an insecure and dangerous place for reporters, warning of more violence against them if the government did not take preventive measures for crimes against journalists.
The ministry of information and culture says that around 100 reporters were killed in the recent years, while the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) says that 1,881 journalists have been killed globally in the past few years.
Seddiq Tawhidi, head of the committee for journalists’ safety said Sunday that the government and relevant bodies had to pay serious attention to journalists’ condition.
The culture ministry said that government had met journalists’ problems, but acknowledged that nearly 100 reporters and media workers were killed in terrorist attacks in the recent years.
It said that powerful individuals, mafia circles and some government officials have incorrect demands from journalists and try to prevent them from unveiling their involvement in corruption.
The UNAMA said that 45 per cent of the 1,881 killings of journalists took place in Afghanistan.
The US Embassy to Kabul also confirms that Afghanistan is not a safe country for journalists, saying that the perpetrators of violence against them are still in impunity.
