KABUL – As the dust settles from the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, parallels between Kabul’s fall in 2021 and Saigon’s in 1975 are hard to ignore. Both nations, heavily dependent on American military and economic support, collapsed swiftly after the withdrawal of U.S. forces, leaving behind chaos, desperation, and a fractured legacy.
In Vietnam, the collapse of the South Vietnamese government was marked by frantic evacuations, reeducation camps, and a long period of political and social repression. Afghanistan, too, has faced a humanitarian crisis, mass displacement, and the resurgence of authoritarian rule under the Taliban.
Both cases serve as grim reminders of the limits of foreign intervention. Despite years of military engagement and investment, the underlying issues of weak governance, corruption, and dependence on external support proved insurmountable.
The echoes of Vietnam are evident in Afghanistan’s plight. Once pivotal battlegrounds in global superpower conflicts, both countries now stand as cautionary tales of how great powers often withdraw, leaving nations to fend for themselves amidst turmoil.
