KABUL: Afghan government has called on the International Criminal Court and Human Rights Watchdog to probe the crimes committed by the Taliban since they intensified their offensive earlier this year.
Welcoming reports by international human rights organizations and the United Nations bodies for documenting Taliban violence, Deputy Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hamid Tahzeb called for a thorough probe.
He called on the international community to cooperate with the Afghan government to stop the Taliban from committing more crimes against humanity, hold them accountable and putt an end to the culture of impunity.
This follows a recent report by Human Rights Watchdog that said Taliban took more than 300 civilians in Kandahar hostage after capturing the Spin Boldak district. It said the Taliban randomly dragged people out of their homes and took them to unknown locations for allegedly working with the government. Some of them, including sons of a provincial councilmember, have reportedly been killed by the militants.
Earlier, Patricia Gassman, the Asia director at Human Rights Watch, warned that the Taliban would perpetrate more atrocities against people in Kandahar.
The fighting in Kandahar has displaced more than 22,000 families who have fled their homes to safe areas. Roads have been closed, power has been shut, and there is scarcity of healthcare facilities. Clashes still continue in several parts of Kandahar city.
The head of Afghanistan’s Independent Human Rights Commission, Shahrzad Akbar in her twitter page called International Human Rights Commission to take notice of the alarming human rights situation in Afghanistan.
