KABUL – Trade between Afghanistan and India surpassed $779 million in 2023, according to Ministry of Industry and Commerce. Afghanistan exports totaled $579 million and imports amounted to $200 million.
A ministry spokesperson, Abdul Salam Akhundzada, made the announcement, saying that India is the biggest market for Afghan fresh and dry fruits.
Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI) emphasized the need for cooperation in utilizing the Chabahar port for shipping. Khan Jan Alokozai, an ACCI member, lamented the absence of Indian ships and the ensuing challenges faced by Afghan traders.
Expressing concerns, traders called upon the officials of the Islamic Emirate to enhance facilities, thereby fostering an environment conducive to regional trade improvements. Mahbobullah Mohammadi, a trader, underscored the negative impact of existing obstacles, such as the lack of export agreements, an unorganized transit framework, customs office issues, and the absence of air corridors.
Responding to these concerns, Zabiullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, assured that efforts would be made to provide additional facilities for traders and address banking challenges. He stated, “We attempt to eliminate the hurdles; thus, our traders will be able to transfer money with an open hand. They will be able to transfer money for export and import.”
According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the main products exported to India include dry and fresh fruits, as well as heng and saffron. The future collaboration between Afghanistan and India holds potential, contingent on overcoming current logistical challenges and improving trade infrastructure.
