Afghanistan inherits America’s war on terrorism

AT News

KABUL: Sources in Afghanistan and the United States say that Washington is to hand over the ongoing so-called ‘war on terror’ to Afghan forces to more facilitate troop withdrawal.

The US was involved in the Afghan war since the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan in an attempt to uproot terrorism and help Afghans have a peaceful life. Since the Qatar peace deal Americans signed with Taliban in 2020, US troops stationed in Afghanistan have stopped any operations against the insurgents who are now advancing in different areas across the country.

After leaving Afghanistan, the United States has been seeking another regional country especially Pakistan for establishing military bases, but Pakistan’s officials including Prime Minister Imran Khan clearly opposed the plan.

A source close to Afghan government who was speaking on condition of anonymity, said Saturday that President Ghani in a meeting with William Joseph Burns, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) opposed his plan that the US troops would launch attacks on terrorists in Afghanistan from a third country.

According to the source, the United States later decided to to hand over all the current war responsibilities to the government of Afghanistan that is expected to be carried out by the Afghan Special Forces.

The source added that the US is “very confident” in the Afghan Special Forces to fight terrorism.

General Dawlat Waziri, a military expert, says that Afghan security forces have proved to fight terrorism very well.

But he said that terrorist groups like al-Qaeda and Daesh are not only a threat to Afghanistan, but they are posing threat to the international community. “So, the international community needs to increase cooperation with the Afghan forces in arms and financially.”

He called for modern and sophisticated weapons to Afghan forces.
