KABUL – In a significant economic development, Iranian officials have announced that the annual trade volume between Afghanistan and Iran has surpassed the $4 billion mark. During a visit to Taybad on Monday, Alireza Marhamati, Iran’s Consul General in Herat, emphasized Afghanistan’s pivotal role as Iran’s most important economic partner.
According to reports from Iran’s IRNA news agency, Mehdi Shirdel, the Governor of Taybad, revealed in a meeting with Marhamati that the thriving trade exchanges underline the crucial function of the Dogharoon border crossing. Shirdel remarked, “Iran’s trade exchanges with Afghanistan amount to $4 billion annually, demonstrating the significant role of the Dogharoon border crossing,” which he described as Iran’s most vital economic gateway to its neighbor.
He also highlighted the need for improved facilitation of exports and goods transit through this critical border point. Currently, approximately 1,200 Iranian and Afghan trucks cross the Dogharoon border daily, alongside more than 3,000 travelers, drivers, and businesspeople from both countries, culminating in over one million legal crossings each year.
The substantial trade volume and frequent movement of people underscore the necessity of enhancing trade infrastructure and transit facilities at the Dogharoon border, which serves as a vital economic artery linking Iran and Afghanistan.
